You don't have to be a Houston Astro to enjoy the advantages of Synthetic Turf - Sports

A bit of trivia for sports buffs - synthetic turf has its origins in experiments dating way back in the 1960s. David Chaney, one-time dean of the North Carolina State University College of Textiles, led the team of researchers who created what would soon become a veritable revolution in the world of sports.

Synthetic turf is a man-made surface made from synthetic materials specifically designed to look like natural grass. Its main use is for field-type sports where maintaining real grass under the excessive wear and tear imposed by activities like football and baseball can lead to impractically high labor and material costs.

This type of surface earned most of its popularity in 1965, serving the Houston Astro baseball team and organization. The Astro connection helped to quickly push synthetic grass surfaces into the limelight. Soon enough, more sports facilities started to realize the advantages of having a turf playing field that didn't have to be groomed or watered, and could therefore be placed in a covered arena or stadium.

Early versions of artificial turf made for a far harder playing surface than grass, and so became quite notorious for raising the chances of player injuries. As a result, sports organizations like FIFA and UEFA banned the use of this surface material for a number of years. However, in the interest of being 'green' and with the continuous advancement of related technologies, many field sports' governing bodies are expressing a renewed interest in resurrecting the use of synthetic turf.

Currently, so-called 'third-generation' artificial turf uses sand and/or rubber infill and silicon-coated fiber 'grass blades.' This results in a surface that is virtually indistinguishable from natural grass when viewed at different distances, and are generally regarded as being as safe to play on as natural grass.
