Artificial Lawns–Reasons to Have One Installed in Your Backyard

Artificial lawns are popping up in more and more backyards all over the place. If you've always thought that an artificial lawn was something that you would never install at your house, think again. There are 3 great reasons to have synthetic turf in your backyard:

1.It looks just like the real thing

If it were 30 years ago, most homeowners wouldn't be caught dead with an artificial lawn at their home. That's because the artificial grass turf of old looked fake, neon, and rug-like.

However, today's synthetic turf looks just like real grass. In many cases, you can't even tell the difference, unless you really get out and inspect it.In fact, you have likely driven by plenty of homes that have an artificial lawn and never even noticed it!
2.It is a one-time investment

Artificial grass turf is going to cost more in the beginning than sod or seed. However, you only have to spend money on it one time.

Once it is installed, an artificial lawn is completely maintenance-free.It never has to be mowed or fertilized. You will not have to spend money on lawn tools or spend your weekend tending to the grass, instead of enjoying it.

You also will not have to spend money to water an artificial lawn.Have you ever looked at your water bills? Keeping your lawn hydrated is costing you hundredsor even thousands or dollars every year! What could you do with all of that extra money instead?

Plus, artificial lawns won't die in a frigid winter or wilt in a scorching summer. Unlike sod and seed, artificial grass turf can hold its own against the elements. You will not have to worry about replacing it when the seasons change.

3.It can actually be safer than real grass
Have you ever closely looked at your grass? If you do, you will notice that it is not completely flat.Instead, it has little peaks and valleys in it.No matter how hard you work to maintain it, or how careful you were laying the sod or seed, that's just how grass grows.

However, those tiny peaks and valleys can also be dangerous. If you or your kids try to run over them, it makes for an uneven surface and you can wind up tripping and falling.

But, with artificial lawns, there are no peaks and valleys. The surface is completely level, so sprained ankles and twisted knees are less of a threat.

Artificial Lawn Grass: An Overview of the Installation

Energy conservation, water conservation and conservation of natural resources are a few things we are hearing from environmentalists and friends all the time. Some wise people have taken it seriously and want to contribute a little from their side also. For water conservation, many individuals have replaced their natural lawn with artificial lawn grass. The advantages of having artificial lawn grasses are quite wide ranging; the most significant one among them is: low maintenance cost. The price of an artificial turf is quite high; however, if you can install it yourself, you can save a significant amount of money. Here, we have discussed the basics of the installation of artificial lawn grass.

The first step of installing artificial grass involves excavating the area; the depth should ideally be around 3.5 to 4 inches.

The second step involves installing the bender board. Generally, this board is made up of recycled supplies (this contributes hugely to the environment). Before buying, you should make sure that the bender board is waterproof and will not chip, split or rot. It is best to install the board in a way so that it surrounds the entire perimeter.

The third step involves installing substrate. Crushed granite is the most widely used substrate; it provides first-rate drainage for the lawn. While installing the same, you should make sure that there is a small crown in between to guarantee good water run-off.

Now, it is time to install the artificial lawn grass. The roll is rolled out. It is cut according to the size of the lawn using carpet knives and kickers. Galvanized staples and pneumatic staple guns are used to attach the material to the area. At times, U-shaped ground hooks are also used to fix the synthetic grass; however, they are not as firm as the guns and staples and come out comparatively faster. Hooks are only used for their low costs, but actually are not good alternatives.

Once the artificial grass in installed, it is time to bloom it. Blooming of the grass is done using power brooms. These power brooms make the fibres stand up straight. If you have bought a no-infill synthetic turf, then with blooming the installation of the artificial lawn grass is complete; but if it is an infill turf, then you cannot do without filling sand in between the grass fibres and coat the top with rubber granules. Many feel that this procedure is messy and often the sand and granules get into shoes and clothes of the installer. A significant difference between no-infill and infill is that the former has more grass blades per square meter. No-infill turfs also come with an extra thatch layer in between the backing and up to half way of the artificial grass blades.

Now, you know the basics of the installation procedure of artificial lawn grass. Once everything is in place, you will need to use two things for the lawn's maintenance: a nylon rake and a leaf blower.

If you find the process too cumbersome, you can always hire the services of a professional artificial grass installer.

Artificial Lawn Grass: How to Maintain It?

It is always nice to plant green grass in your lawn for enhancing the splendour of the place. The only disadvantage is that it requires constant and thorough maintenance. The same natural feel can also be achieved by artificial lawn grass, but with much less maintenance. Many people opt for this alternative these days for saving their time and money. Once you have artificial lawn grass in place, you will not have to worry about mowing the grass or watering it, fertilizing or de-weeding it. These grasses are also very popular in arid areas.

Saying so doesn't mean that the artificial grass does not require any maintenance at all. It is true that it requires much less care when compared to its natural counterpart, but still for preserving the perfect appearance you must know a few things about preserving synthetic turfs. Here are some essential tips for people having artificial lawns:

Weeding and Disinfecting

You usually are not required to disinfect natural grass lawn, as nature takes care of it. But with artificial grasses, you are required to periodically disinfect it. You don't have to necessarily opt for a chemical spray, as many environmentally-friendly disinfectants are also available easily to meet the purpose. Weeds are also a common and known problem with the artificial grass lawns. It is advised by the ASGI (The association of Synthetic Grass Installers) to use a spray of a mixture of vinegar and clove oil. It is especially important to spray your artificial lawn during the rainy season, and before spring. If you don't have any inhibition against using chemicals, the market also stores chemical sprays manufactured especially for these kinds of lawns.

Cleaning

Your synthetic lawn would require cleaning at least once every month. You should be careful enough not to use a metal rake on the artificial grass, as it can weaken or tear the fibres. You can use a hose to make sure that all the accumulated dirt is washed away through the built-in drainage system of the turf. You should keep removing leaves, twigs etc from time to time using a leaf blower.

Brushing

It is imperative that you brush your lawn from time to time, as it would prevent the fibres from matting down. You can use a stiff broom or any other brush with slightly hard bristles for this purpose. Besides keeping the lawn clean, it will also make sure that all grass blades are in upright position.

Using Ice for Special Purpose

If your children mistakenly drop chewing gums on your artificial lawn grass, ASGI has a solution for you. They advise you to rub ice on the dropped piece of gum; as the gum gets cold, you can easily remove it.

Keeping Harmful Substances Away

To ensure long life of your artificial lawn grass, make sure that the cleansing elements and other products you buy for maintaining it do not contain acetone, alcohol or other harsh chemicals. You should keep lubricating oil, acids etc away from synthetic grass, as they can cause discolouration.

Artificial Turf Manufacturers Making Artificial Lawn Easier to Have

Years ago, you would have never dreamed of installing an artificial lawn outside of your yard. After all, that fake grass was a hideous shade of green, and it looked more like a bad rug than a yard. But artificial turf manufacturers have been hard at work, and they have come up with an ">artificial lawn that actually looks like a real one.
Now that ">fake lawn grass doesn't look so fake, more and more people are having it installed at their homes. Since it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb anymore, most people don't even realize when they're passing by an artificial lawn.
Plus, an artificial lawn is much easier to care for than a real one. With the fake grass, you do not have to water it, mow it, or fertilize it. Once it's installed, you simply enjoy it; there is absolutely no maintenance!
Plus, an artificial lawn will last a whole lot longer than real grass. Think about it - how long does your grass usually last? Does one record cold snap kill it? Do a few weeks of drought in the summer scorch it for good? If you feel like you're sodding or seeding every couple of months, get an artificial lawn. It can withstand anything that Mother Nature throws at it. Whether you're dealing with snow, rain, or extreme heat, your artificial lawn can take it.
If you didn't have to worry about watering, mowing, or replacing your grass, how much money could you save? How much lower would your water bills be? How much money would you save on lawn tools? How much money would you save on new seed or sod? With an artificial lawn, you can put all that money back in your pocket!
But that's not the only way that fake lawn grass can save you money.
Since ">artificial turf manufacturers have perfected the process for making fake grass, they have come up with ways to make it cheaper - meaning you can get ">artificial grass at wholesale prices. Even if you have a large yard - or an even bigger area to worry about, like a city park - you can still afford to get an artificial lawn.

Artificial Lawn Grass for Dog Owners

Most of us love to have pets; and for majority of us dogs top the list of favourite pets. If you are planning to have a dog as a pet, or you already have one, you must know how important it is to have a lawn to train the dogs.

The primary hitch is that often the dogs playing outside in the lawn get muddy paws and the dirt is dragged back to the house. It is truly very annoying to clean the floor repeatedly; it is also not possible to ban the dog from going outside or playing in the lawn. Not just that, dogs playing outside in the lawn also end up digging and spoiling the grass in the lawn. In such cases, replacing the natural grass lawn with an artificial one comes in handy.

These days, many people are opting for artificial lawn instead of the real lawns. Artificial lawns have their own advantages; you will not have to go through lengthy procedures for their maintenance, they do not require regular watering, and are extremely pet friendly.

Let us find out some more advantages of having artificial grass when you have dogs or other pets at home.

Artificial lawn grass is made up of polyethylene and polypropylene. These materials are melted and then shaped into long yarn like fibres. None of these two materials has toxic effect on your dog even if it nibbles the grass. To maintain the upright positioning of synthetic grass blades, washed sand is used; this ensures that the grass blades don't wither due to any heavy usage. This means, your dog won't be able to puncture your artificial grass, doesn't matter how hard he tries.

Artificial grass offers the similar feel that a lawn with natural grass will present. Therefore, not only you but your dog will also enjoy running and playing on a synthetic grass turf as much as it used to enjoy those activities on real grass.

Preserving an artificial lawn include some simple steps. Owners don't have to worry about the dog wastes. These turfs come with a very effective drainage system, which let the urine and other wastes from the dog to permeate through, and nothing gets accumulated on the surface. If you are worried about the solid waste from your pet, rest assured; it can be easily expelled using a hose.

This artificial turf will not require any fertilizers, insecticides or pesticides. This means, your dog will be playing in a chemical free environment. You will also not have to worry about mowing the grass every now and then. Discolouration or spots will no more bother you once you have installed artificial lawn grass. Dogs will fail to dig through the lawn, and no more muddy paws will leave prints all over the house. All these points suggest that artificial lawn grass can be an excellent choice for all dog owners.

With the synthetic grass in place, you can create a dog-friendly environment, without being bothered about so many health and cleaning issues.

Artificial Lawn Grass: What Are the Environmental Benefits?

There has been a trend to have a big green garden since quite some time. To fulfil this trend, gardens have become popular throughout the world. Some studies establish the fact that these natural gardens cause certain dangers to the environment. People who are conscious about the hazards that natural grass causes to the environment are shifting to artificial grass. This step is one of many initiatives that we can take for making the world a better place to live for us and for our future generations. Let us have a close look at the environmental benefits offered by artificial lawn grass.

The first and foremost thing about the artificial lawn grass is that it is recyclable and lead-free; therefore it doesn't impose any potential threat to the environment as far as its manufacturing procedure is concerned. If you compare natural lawns with the artificial ones, you will find that an average naturally grown lawn consumes thousands of gallons of water each year. A big share of this water is wasted due to improper watering techniques, giving the lawns more water than what is actually required. When you have artificial grasses, you can do without any irrigation. This means: artificial lawn grass contributes hugely to conservation of water. This feature is making the synthetic lawns extremely popular in the states suffering from water crisis

Naturally grown turfs need to use pesticides and fertilizers for killing insects and enhancing growth of the grasses; this makes them serious threats for our environment. The composition of nitrates found in fertilizers gets mixed in the soil and makes their way to the water tables; these chemicals end up contaminating the water. Similarly, when we are exposed to the pesticides we are likely to catch serious diseases like cancer, allergies etc. When we have an artificial lawn, we don't need to use any fertilizer or pesticide; as a result the environment is not contaminated with harsh chemicals.

Natural lawns produce huge quantity of yard waste. The yard waste contributes largely to the total waste produced by the country. Lawn clippings are the main sources of the yard wastes. When such wastes are dumped together, many chemical reactions take place producing harmful gases like Methane (the gas hugely responsible for the green house effect and global warming). We can control such circumstances by installing artificial lawn grass.

The equipments used for the maintenance of natural lawns are causes of major concerns for the environmentalists. One such device is the lawn mower. When we use the lawn mower a large number of gaseous pollutants are released to the air. According to a recent analysis, lawn mower is the premium cause of air pollution is most European and North American countries. Other than that, the gas mowers need to be refilled by fuels at regular intervals; this results in the depletion of important energy resources.

The discussion educates us about the good effects of artificial lawn grass to our environment. The best thing about synthetic lawns is that it will not only keep you safe, but will also make your home look as much gorgeous as a natural lawn could have done.

Top 3 Tips For Ensuring Proper Drainage Of Your Yard

During the rainy season, many homeowners go down to their basement, only to discover that there is flooding. In fact, approximately 60% of homeowners deal with some kind of drainage problem in their yard. In order to prevent your basement from flooding and divert water away from your home, it's essential to ensure proper yard drainage. Fortunately, most yards can be drained effectively, and it's rare for water problems in a yard to be unsolvable. Here are the top 3 tips for achieving better yard drainage.

1. Make sure that the soil in your yard slopes away from your home, and identify the cause of the flooding. For example, you may find that there is a depression in the yard that causes the water to pool or that excess water from the roof is draining near the foundation of your home. Make sure that any gutters you install are properly installed and drain water away from the foundation of the home. All water should drain at a spot that is lower than your home.

2. Construct drain tile pipes in the ground to gather water during rainstorms. Drainpipes carry water away from the home and ideally discharge it near a sewer or retention pond. The drainpipes may have to cross under your driveway or a sidewalk. Map out a plan consisting of the underground channel where the drainpipe will go. Once you determine where the drainpipe will go, dig out a trench that's about a foot deep and lay down an inch or so of gravel before placing the drainpipe in the trench. The drainpipe should then be covered with gravel as well as a few inches of dirt and sod. It is important to first cover the drainpipe with gravel to prevent its holes from clogging.

3. Consider switching from natural grass to artificial turf. Artificial turf is designed so that water passes through its base, meaning that flooding is rarely a problem. However, if your yard is not relatively flat, some landscaping may be required before you lay down artificial turf. If you are dealing with yard drainage problems and there are muddy areas in your lawn, switching to artificial turf can be very beneficial because of its excellent drainage properties. If you decide to install artificial turf in your backyard, a specialist can examine your yard and determine an appropriate layout. Typically, artificial turf with sand and rubber infill is used in backyards because liquids drain right through it.

Study Confirms Safety of Using Recycled Rubber for Playgrounds and Athletic Fields

Copyright (c) 2010 Janet Blackwell

Findings from a new study that again confirms the safety of using recycled rubber for playgrounds and athletic fields. The study looked at the health risks to children and adults and found no elevated health risks. The announcement from the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CDPH) validates findings from separate studies conducted by five other agencies.

The two-year study by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) looked at fields containing crumb rubber infill, which is recycled rubber. The study was a joint effort between four state agencies - the University of Connecticut Health Center, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, the Department of Public Health and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). In addition nine scientists from the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE) reviewed the study.

Recycled rubber is also a safe choice for playgrounds and the same recycled rubber surface used by Little League teams. It has been recommended by those who treat children for playground falls - one of the most common injuries (see this video about playground safety).

Recycled rubber has been again studied and found to be safe for our children. It is the surface the Obamas chose to use on the White House playground. Recycled rubber playground mulch is not only sound for environmental reasons but it protects kids from dangerous falls.

Other agencies to report similar findings of the Connecticut study include: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other governmental agencies, including the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Health, the New York City Department of Health, and the California EPA.

Additional details of the study found no elevated health risks from outdoor and indoor artificial turf fields due to the inhalation of volatile or particle bound chemicals. Readings at an indoor field were below levels of concern but ventilation is recommended. Water quality was also evaluated. Storm water runoff from artificial turf fields was found to pose no risk to drinking water. There is a potential risk for surface waters and aquatic organisms due to higher zinc levels. The EPA and NY State Department of Environmental Conservation used different test methods and found zinc levels were well below levels of concern to the same group.

In over 40 years of EPA oversight and OSHA regulated manufacturing, there has never been an instance of illness attributed recycled rubber on playgrounds or its use for synthetic turf. Instead, recycled rubber is a sound environmental solution.
