Lawn Care Against Fungal Diseases - Home - Gardening

Soil fungi cause most of the severe lawn diseases. They are severe because they are hard to be treated and eliminated for good. They keep on recurring in one way or the other causing lot of troubles in the due course. The worst part with fungal infections is that they are misinterpreted by people who are unable to detect the real cause of an apparent damage. They try all sorts of insecticides and pesticides instead of a proper fungicide formula and end up creating more damage to their lawns. Proper lawn care targeting fungus prevention is the best way to protect your lawn plants and grasses from certain dreadful diseases.

What causes a possible fungal infection?

Soil compaction, lack of proper aeration, improper watering, wrong fertilizing methods, excess fertilizer, wrong plantation methods etc. are some of the common causes. So for the starters, you should correct your lawn care techniques in all the above aspects so that you do not ran a risk of fungus and mold attacks. Practice appropriate lawn irrigation methods. The best time to water your lawn is during the early hours of morning. This is the time when they absorb more water. This makes the grasses healthy making them immune to fungus.

Ensure that there is enough aeration happening in your lawn. Air circulation to the roots is important.

Use compost for fertilization as they retard the growth of pathogens causing diseases to certain common plants and grasses.

Find out whether the grass seeds you have used are truly compatible with the climate in your location. Seeds unfit for the soil and climate do not stand a chance against fighting diseases. When climate supports the fungus growth, it should also support the plants, and if it doesnt then they cannot survive against fungal pathogens that are growing naturally stronger.

The fertilizer you use should also be supportive of the specific species or subspecies of grasses, shrubs and plants growing in your lawn. Do not use a general fertilizer for all sorts of plants. Be selective when it comes to unique plants as their growth requirements are also unique. Enquire about the best timings for fertilization. Again the timings depend on the type of grass.

Avoid synthetic fertilizers. If possible find a completely organic fertilizer free of artificial hormones. Slow release fertilizers would be the best choice. This would ensure slow but steady growth which is healthier than sudden spurting. Studies and observations have proved that fast growing grasses are more susceptible to different types of fungal diseases.

As a basic precaution you can use some homemade remedies for fighting fungus growth. A combination of backing soda and vegetable oil is one of the safest options many lawn care experts use for making their lawns and gardens immune to fungus.
