VIC Tender for Synthetic Turf - Business

Victoria, Australia is currently seeking applications via a VIC Tender to assist with the massive task of overhauling the grounds of all Victorian schools.

The Department currently manages an asset portfolio worth some $10 billion, comprising some 1,150 primary schools and 250 secondary colleges, and a further 70 combined secondary schools and special schools for an overall total of some 1550 school establishments. The Victorian Government is currently implementing an ambitious capital program to modernise or upgrade all Victorian schools by 2016-17 under the Victorian Schools Plan.

The starting point is a synthetic turf pilot project.Grass stains on children's sports uniform could soon be a thing of the past.Once seen as extravagant and possibly dangerous, synthetic turf is now being used all over Australia. Made from millions of synthetic fibres sewn together with rubber granules for cushioning, coaches everywhere are praising the near-perfect surface of their playing fields.

With water in Victoria at an all time low, synthetic turf seems to be the perfect solution. According to some studies it can be played on three times more than traditional turf.Once looking like 'plastic grass' the product is now sophisticated enough to mimic the real thing.

Some synthetic turf companies even offer a water collection service, where water falling on the turf is collected and stored for use.Because different colours can be used, permanent court and track markings can be made as well as things like hopscotch squares in the playground.

The Melbourne Age has reported this week that the AFL is considering artificial turf for local levels of football following a study by the University of Ballarat:It was reported that "A project titled" development of guidelines for the use of artificial turf for Australian football" has been completed by the University of Ballarat, resulting in the formation of an AFL standard contingent on meeting a 12-part criteria. The first oval is due for completion at Point Cook next April."

"... one of the long-standing problems with synthetic grasses was heat causing skin burn, and abrasiveness from sand used in the grass. Now, yarn has been produced that doesn't reflect the sun and so reduces temperature, while rubber-coated sand cuts the abrasiveness," the report said.

With a portfolio comprising 1150 primary schools, this VIC Tender is sure to spark interest among the Australian turf community.
